Here you'll find information about Hjortø

Hjortø is a true nature’s paradise. The island has a rich animal and plant population as well as child friendly beaches. Here is no pub, grocery store or church. With only 4 inhabitants, Hjortø is one of Denmarks least populated islands. Hjortø is barely 1km2 big and very flat – its highest point measures 3,5 meters.

By the Hjortø harbor you will find a small museum which contains stories about the island.

You can experience Hjortø’s rich nature life by watching the many bird migrations which pass over the island. Some of the bird include majestic white-tailed sea eagles and small European wrens. You will also be able to see rare bell frogs and hares rush across the fields. The western part of the island is a protected bird reservoir where access is prohibited from the 1st of March to the 15th of July. The Copenhagen Zoo has run a program which releases rare beach toads onto the beaches for many years. These toads have become more common in nature and can be recognized by unique patterns on their belly. Herrefod cattle graze across the island´s fields and are transported to Taasinge everywhere via the cattle barge Yrsa each year.

It is possible to stay on the island overnight in a shelter or in a tent.
